sims

Fines are penalties that can occur in most games in The Sims series. Fines subtract money from the household's funds. If there are not enough to cover the fine, household funds will be reduced to zero. In addition, objects may be repossessed, though this will depend on the game and the reason for the fine.

The Sims

Whenever a fine occurs, a sound effect will play.

Police

In The Sims, calling the police when there is no burglar will not result in a fine, and the Sims will instead be reprimanded. However, in The Sims for console, they may be fined after the first warning, and objects may be confiscated if they cannot afford the fine.

Prior to House Party, the police may warn the family about excessive noise if they have too many visiting Sims over at night. If the player does not send all the visiting Sims home in time, the police will reappear and fine the Sims §200.

If a Sim makes or drinks a potion from the chemistry set outdoors during school hours, they may be fined §500 for the smell.[TS:LL]

Calling the fire department when there is no fire will result in a §100 fine. If the family has less than §100, the family's funds will be reduced to zero, but no objects will be confiscated.

Magic

If a Sim uses magic in front of a non-magical Sim (a Sim without a wand, who is in the same room as the caster and is not the target of the spell) when not in Magic Town, the Spellchecker will show up and fine the caster.

Others

Some chance cards may result in a fine. If the family does not have enough to cover the amount of the fine, its funds will be reduced to zero, but objects will not be repossessed.

The Sims Bustin' Out (handheld)

If a Sim is arrested, a §100 fine can be paid to get him or her out of jail.

The Urbz: Sims in the City

Console

Fines can occur if an Urb passes out or runs out of Bladder while in a district. It is possible to be fined if for making too much of a mess, such as having too much trash.

Unlike other games, calling the police or fire department when there is no emergency will not result in a fine.

Handheld

As in Bustin' Out, if the player's Urb is arrested, he/she can pay a §100 fine to get out of jail.

The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories

In The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories, objects will be confiscated if the player cannot pay the fine; funds will not normally be reduced to §0. If the player has no objects and has less than §500, the police officer/firefighter will criticize the family for wasting their time in a similar fashion to the repo-man, and then leave. Sims will receive a negative memory of getting fined and a positive memory for meeting the police officer or firefighter who fined them. Sims will not receive the negative memory for being fined multiple times from the same police officer or firefighter.

Police in The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories will always fine the Sim without warning. The police officer will lecture the Sim and fine the Sim §500. The officer may take away an object if the player has less than §500. The lecture can trigger fury.[TS2:NL]

Firefighter

The firefighter will lecture and then fine the Sim. The fine is now §500. Like the police fine, the lecture can trigger fury. The firefighter will also repossess objects if the family has less than §500.

Other

The Sims 2 (Other Platforms)

Console

A §250 fine can occur if a Sim calls the police or fire department when there is no emergency. As in other games, objects will be taken away if the family has less money than the amount of the fine.

GBA

As in The Urbz, a §100 fine can be paid if a Sim is arrested.

DS

Every time the a Sim is arrested, there is a §200 fine.

The Sims 2 Pets (Console)

PS2, Gamecube, PSP and Wii

A §250 fine will be assessed if a Sim player calls the police or fire department when there is no emergency. If the Sim has §249 or less, objects will be taken away.

The Sims 3 and The Sims 3 for Console

The Sims 3 fines work almost the same as The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories except that a lecture will no longer severely decrease relationship.

Police

Like The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories, the Sim will be lectured and then fined §500. The officer will also take away an object if the household has less than §500 but funds will not be reduced to §0. If the household has no objects that can be taken away and less than §500, nothing will happen but the Sim will still be lectured and the message of being fined will still appear. If testingcheatsenabled is used to spawn the police, the player will be fined (unless the burglar is spawned) as if they were called.

Like the police, the Firefighter will fine the Sim §500. Unlike the Police, if the household has less than §500 then the firefighter won't take away an object and funds will not be reduced to §0.

If the Firefighter was called (Either by phone or by fire alarm) and the fire was put out prior to the firefighter coming, the player will not be fined when they arrive. Like the police, if testingcheatsenabled is used to force the firefighter to spawn, the player will be fined unless if there is a fire.

Detonating/Smashing

In The Sims 3: Ambitions and The Sims 3: Deluxe, a Sim can be fined for detonating objects (or using Smash as a Simbot)[confirmation needed] outside of the Junkyard or the Sim's home. At first, this will result in a warning, but after the first time, it will result in a fine. Fines may be cheap (§50) or expensive (§175,000) but this depends on the cost of the object. With The Sims 3: Late Night, the Sim may also get the Publicly Disgraced moodlet. While this does not automatically take away cash, it adds to the Sim's bills. Detonating objects in other Sims' homes does not cause a fine but this is considered inappropriate behavior and you will be warned accordingly unless your Sim has the relevant traits or lifetime rewards.
