Microwave ovens are small appliances that can be used to cook simple meals in The Sims, The Sims 2, The Sims 3, and The Sims 4. The object can be found in buy mode under "Appliances → Small appliances". In The Sims, they can be placed on end tables as well as on counters or surfaces that function as counters. In The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, they must be placed on counters or surfaces that function as counters. In The Sims 2 and The Sims 3, cooking skill points can be earned from using a microwave.

The Sims

In The Sims, a microwave oven can make quick meals or steak and beans like any other stove. A household can have a microwave oven and a full-scale stove, but if this is done, the player will have no control over which one the Sims use. Unlike stoves and the toaster oven, there is no risk of fire when cooking with a microwave.

Notes

The Sims 2

In The Sims 2, a microwave oven can only prepare a TV dinner and a Cup o' Ramen[University], and the Cup o' Ramen can only be prepared in a microwave; both of these dishes are single-serving only, meaning that group meals cannot be prepared with a microwave. Sims can burn food that is being cooked in a microwave, though it will not catch on fire. If a household has a microwave and a full scale stove, clicking on the microwave and choosing to make a TV dinner does not ensure that the Sim will use the microwave. Microwaves may break like many other appliances. If FreeTime is installed, they can be tinkered with.

The Sims 3

In The Sims 3, Sims can prepare a quick microwave meal using the microwave, and Sims can microwave hot dogs and tofu dogs. University Life added ramen, pizza, popcorn, curry wurst, and a breakfast burrito as quick meals that can be microwaved.[1] Microwaves do not appear to have a hunger rating.

SimBots[TS3:A] can "Converse With" microwaves. During the chat, the microwave will occasionally make beep-bop sounds and bounce a bit, at least some of which is due to the SimBot randomly pressing buttons on the microwave. If the chat goes on long enough, the SimBot will amorously hug the microwave, but the microwave won't show up in the relationship panel.

A mere footnote in kitchen history, the Sonarange line of ovens were meant to rival microwave technology through the means of propelling sound waves rapidly through food—hence the tagline, "Cooking at the speed of sound!" Noise complaints from neighbors led to a short lived presence in the market, and the company was forced to build microwaves to avoid bankruptcy.
