A reception desk is an object typically located in the lobbies of hotels and resorts. Reception desks are used to check in and out of rooms.

The Sims: Vacation

Reception desks are found at hotels on Vacation Island. Adult sims can check in at any time during the day and must do so in order to use the beds in the hotel room. Sims must check out before 11AM the day they plan on leaving the hotel or else they will be charged for another night's stay although they are not required to stay if they are charged for another night. If sims leave Vacation Island without checking out, the hotel room key will be automatically returned to the reception desk.

Reception desks are always manned by a female sim whose name starts with C.

The Sims 2: Bon Voyage

Reception desks are found at hotel lots, where Sims can check out, or pay to extend their stay. Reception desks are usually manned by a male adult sim and a female maid. The receptionist will always stand at his desk and will not leave unless he is delivering room service to a hotel room. He will occasionally make calls on his phone although these will have no results. The maid will usually leave the hotel at night and return in the morning. Sims must check in at a reception desk in order to enter any hotel room as well as use any of its amenities. If a sim checks out and there are still sims in the hotel room, all sims in the room will stop what they're doing, leave the hotel room and will not be reenter the hotel room unless they check in again.

The Sims 2 (Nintendo DS)

Strangetown Hotel has a front desk staffed by Concierge, which appears to be a legal name rather than a job position title.

One desk is automatically spawned somewhere on a lot when they get the Resort lot assignment. Additionally, additional desks can be bought from Buy Mode → Resorts, an option that only shows up on Resort lots. A resort needs at least one desk to function correctly. The game fully allows having 2 or more reception desks on the same resort lot.

Desks will only work if there's a resort staff member working at the desk, and depending on the lot, it can potentially take hours between each time it is manned.

Sims can use the desk to check in for between 1 and 4 nights. Once checked in, or the Sim owns the lot as property, they can also ask the desk worker about:

If mods are used to place a desk on any other lot, players will be notified that the lot will automatically be converted to a resort lot upon re-entering live mode.

MySims

The MyTown Hotel has a reception desk in the lobby, but it's unclear if it can actually be used for anything.
