A spell book is a book that teaches magic spells. It can be found in The Sims: Makin' Magic, The Sims 2: Apartment Life, The Sims 3 Store, The Sims Medieval, and The Sims 4: Realm of Magic. The Sims 3: Supernatural combines a spell book and a cauldron into a single object known as an alchemy station.
The Sims: Makin' Magic
The Start Here Spell Book, Version 2.0 is a spell book acquired in a box delivered to new households by the Mystery Man, but it can also be bought in buy mode, along with The Start Here Spell Book, Original. Sims can learn ingredients for spells and charms from these books, but they won't know what these do until they craft them, whereupon the books will update with the description for that spell or charm. If a Sim without a wand attempts to open them, they will suffer a non-lethal electric shock.

| This updated version of the best selling original has come leaps and bounds in the two centuries since its predecessor was first penned. The new Scribe-As-U-Go tracking technology allows the book to update itself as you or any member of your family discover more and more about the wondrous world of domestic magic, spell brewing, and charm making. Noted amendments to this edition include the addition of the "Probably A Spell" recipe section, and the removal of the Book's "Grave Man" defense system. | |

| The first, and pretty much only, name in spell book design, Start Here Spell Books have been sold at the edges of towns all over the world for centuries. This original version may not be as 'new-fangled' as version 2.0, but the original still has the exact same functionality as the latter. It holds recipes, keeps track of spells, and has a shocking experience in store for any non-magical folk who come poking their noses where they don't belong. | |

The Sims 2: Apartment Life
When a Sim becomes a witch or warlock, a Grandiose Grimoirse spell book will be added to the Sim's inventory. The book's title will contain the Sim's name and their alignment title. If the spell book gets removed, new ones can be purchased from a high witch by a witch that is either neutral or is of a compatible-alignment. The Palace of Neverending Light and the Fortress of Eternal Darkness lots also contain spell books that playable witches can claim and use. Witches and warlocks can claim abandoned or unclaimed spell books. The spell book will be of the same alignment of the witch or warlock that possesses it; good witches have white spell books, neutral witches have wood brown, and evil witches have black.
Spell books provide three interactions for allowing witches and warlocks to learn new spells: "Study the Ways of the Light", "Study the Neutral Magics", and "Study the Path of Darkness". If the warlock's or witch's alignment changes, the look of their spell book will change accordingly to the path of magic they're partaking in. Witches and warlocks can also check their abilities using a spell book, which will provide a list of the spells they know, as well as their current alignment, their skill in magic, and the reagents they can craft. Witches and warlocks can also abandon their current spell book in order to claim another one.
Sims can examine spell books that do not belong them. The spell book will attack the Sim upon touch, if they are a non-magical Sim, or a witch of a different magical alignment.

The Sims 3
Players can purchase Lady Ravendancer Goth's Book o' Spells from The Sims 3 Store, which can teach Sims to cast a variety of spells.[1] Teens through elders can perform the following interactions: learn spells, review spells, cast spells.
In The Sims 3: Supernatural, a spell book forms part of the alchemy station, but it cannot be bought on its own.

Sims can learn certain unique spells from the book, which takes around 1 hour 50 minutes per spell to learn. They gain the "Makin' Magic" moodlet (referencing The Sims: Makin' Magic) from successfully learning a spell. Sims have to review spells often in order to achieve better outcomes. If the spell fails, it will usually fizzle out and do nothing.
Sims can learn the following spells from the book:
- Enchant- This spell can be used on Lady Ravendancer's Book o' Spells and other magic objects like Lord Vladimir's Magic Cauldron and the Soothsayer's Crystal Ball. It makes those objects look like they are in use.
- Mood Elevatus- Gives all Sims in the room the
"Brightened Day" +10 moodlet for 3 hours.
- The spell can backfire on the caster, in which case it gives the spellcaster the same "Cursed" moodlet as that of "Summon Animale".
- Summon Animale- This spell can be used in a room with 2 or more people in it to give the target(s) the
"Cursed" -50 moodlet for 12 hours, where the Sim's main idle becomes vaguely canine-like with their head tilting ("Unleash Animale"), scratching their head with their arms, and growling. The target(s) also get the "Really Has to Pee" moodlet and a significant relationship drop with the spellcaster.
- The spell can backfire on the caster, but only appears to give the caster the "Really Has to Pee" moodlet.
- Summon- This spell summons a random Sim from your town to you.
- Summon Acquainted- This spell summons someone with "friend" or higher relationship to you.
If a Sim is also a witch with the spellcasting skill, the interaction wheel will file their known Spellcasting spells and spells learned from Lady Ravendancer Goth's Book o' Spells in two separate "Cast Spell..." tabs.

The Sims 4: Realm of Magic
In The Sims 4: Realm of Magic, spell books are non-physical user interface automatically enabled once a Sim becomes a spellcaster. Each spell book documents all the spells and potions of the individual spellcaster as well as gives information on what the spells do, and what ingredients are needed for potions.
Spells and potions will be greyed out until the spellcaster learns them through training, reading a related tome, or asking about them to a sage. Players can open their spellcaster's spell book from a self interaction under "Magic..." or by selecting "Open Spellbook" within the spellcaster perks menu.
There are also physical tomes which teach a single spell or potion recipe, which can be read by any spellcaster as long as they are at a high enough rank. Tomes can be purchased from a vendor in The Magic Realm, or found in bookcases at the "Magic HQ".
The Sims Medieval
Two spellbook tomes can be bought in The Sims Medieval which are used by Wizards. Wizards can use these tomes to study and prepare spells using runes.
