A terrarium is a storage object in which Sims store minor pets they have caught. Note that with the Pets terrariums, where terrariums are a core feature, Sims will still have to feed the pets in the terrariums regularly.

Terrariums will automatically spawn if a collected insect is moved out of the inventory and to elsewhere on a lot, for the insect to move around in. Empty versions of terrariums are not available in Buy Mode, and insects cannot be moved into empty terrariums. A game mod exists that makes the empty versions available in Buydebug.

The insects will stay in those terrariums indefinitely unless they are moved back into a Sim's inventory, and do not need to be fed or cared for.

Multiple such terrariums, including multiple types of the insect terrariums, can be stacked on top of each other. The tallest possible known stack as of July 2025 is 16, which is more than 2 floors in height.

Separate versions of the terrarium exist for fireflies (which has no greenery)[TS3:ST] and nanites (which has a more geometric shape).[TS3:ITF]

The Sims 3: Outdoor Living Stuff

The Sims 3: Outdoor Living Stuff contains 2 fake terrariums that cannot host any animals. Their only interaction is "View", akin to statues.

Despite its name, it can also be placed on the ground and not just on surfaces. It also costs more than Deluxe Cozy Terrarium despite looking identical to it but without the iron supports.

The Sims 3: Pets

In addition to being able to host caught or purchased small pets, a Sim can also choose "Stock..." on them to buy a relatively common small pet for empty terrariums on the spot. Quick-stocked pets on residential lots are subject to the usual requirements on feeding, while quick-stocked pets on community lots do not need to be fed.
