A coffin or altar is a unique object, popularly (though isn't always the case) intended to serve as a bed for vampires. In The Sims: Makin' Magic and The Sims 3: Supernatural, a particular upright coffin can be bought that houses Bonehilda. In The Sims 2: Nightlife, they freeze the motives of any vampire that sleeps in them while simultaneously shielding them from sunlight. Coffins return in The Sims 4: Vampires and function like the coffins in Nightlife, and serve as a new WooHoo spot for Sims. Coffins also make an appearance in The Sims 4: Life & Death and the limited-time Reaper's Rewards Event.

Coffins in The Sims 2: Nightlife are used by vampires during the day to shield themselves from sunlight. Sims can look inside coffins while a vampire is sleeping, which will scare the Sim, lowering their energy, comfort, hunger, hygiene and bladder by 20. If their motives fall below -40 as a result of the scare, the Sim will die. Death by coffin scare is treated in game as a separate death from fright.

The Sims 3[]
In the The Sims 3 era, coffins are referred to as altars, and vampires will float above them when sleeping (as opposed to crawling into the box). Non-vampires can choose to "Examine" them by looking at them, which they mostly think is simply a stone, commenting on how unsettling the altars are.
