A chair or dining chair is a type of seating found in all major Sims franchise games.
They are most popularly used to sit on while eating food on tables, but can used for wider purposes too. Some objects, such as computers and chess sets, cannot be used unless a chair is present. In The Sims and The Sims 2, chairs fill the comfort motive. In The Sims 3, they give the "Comfy" moodlet. Dining chairs are designed to be used in front of objects, such as dining tables, desks, and chess sets, that Sims use while sitting. They are generally animated so that Sims can slide them back from, and back to, what they are in front of, which adds realism. Therefore, office-style chairs are often grouped as dining chairs.[TS1][TS2][TS3]
However, they usually cannot be used for bars, for which barstools are needed instead.
The Sims 2
In The Sims 2, the player can place multiple dining chairs consecutively without having to press the ⇧ Shift key, allowing for easier placement around tables.
Over the span of expansion and stuff pack releases, there are over 47 of chairs in total:
- Base game alone provides 17.
- The Sims 2: University expansion pack adds 2 more.
- The Sims 2: Nightlife expansion pack adds 4 more.
- The Sims 2: Open for Business expansion pack adds 1 more.
- The Sims 2: Family Fun Stuff pack adds 2 more.
- The Sims 2: Glamour Life Stuff pack adds 1 more.
- The Sims 2: Pets expansion pack adds 2 more.
- The Sims 2: Seasons expansion pack adds 4 more.
- The Sims 2: Celebration! Stuff pack adds 4 more.
- The Sims 2: Bon Voyage expansion pack adds 1 more.

Chairs are now also used for things like fire pits, unfurnished desks (e.g. to do homework), and domino tables.[TS3:ST]
Additionally, whereas The Sims 2 had builders place chairs 1sq away from the table, where they'd slide into place only when entering Live Mode, The Sims 3 allows (and requires) putting the chairs into place partway under the table while still in Buy Mode.
The Sims 4
Chairs return in The Sims 4 and in many of its expansion packs.
