An espresso bar is an object that allows Sims to buy espresso on a community lot, thereby gaining some energy.

There will also very often be spawned a barista non-playable character to staff the bar, which functions similarly to bartenders for certain types of bars.

The Sims: Unleashed

Espresso bars were introduced in The Sims: Unleashed, with Travelin' Joe's Espresso Bar. When placed on a community lot, it would allow Sims to buy a cup of espresso for §12, and would spawn one of three NPC baristas: Travelin' Griff, Travelin' Greg, or Travelin' Joe. If placed on an Old Town lot, it would also spawn the wandering saxophone player W.C. Friendly. Friendly will often spawn directly in front of the bar, preventing Sims from purchasing an espresso until he moves away.

Peddling coffee to Sims on the go is what he does...he's Travelin' Joe. Got a product to ship? Feel your date might just slip? Or perhaps you're a little bit slow. Never you mind, when you're in a bind, he can get your ideas to flow. Are you feeling drowsy? Or just a bit lousy? Can you no longer keep thoughts in your head? Drop by and see Joe, drink espresso, and stop thinking so much about bed!

The Sims 2

In The Sims 2: University, the espresso bar was re-introduced as the Impresso Espress-o-Matic. In addition to being able to buy espresso (for §20), a Sim could make a few simoleons by working at the bar as a barista. The espresso bar was also reintroduced in The Sims 2: Apartment Life. Sims may also choose to work as a Barista and take over from the assigned NPC, this will earn the Sim §80 per hour (or more specifically §16 every 12 minutes).

When a Sim orders an espresso, the barista will produce two cups, and serve one to the customer. If a second Sim orders an espresso, the barista will serve the remaining cup, but will not produce more unless a third Sim orders from the bar. If an espresso bar is located on the same lot as a restaurant, servers from the restaurant may go over to the bar and dispose of the second cup of coffee, forcing the barista to produce a new batch every time a Sim orders from them. This is fixed with the coffeecuphack mod from More Awesome Than You.

If University and Mansion & Garden Stuff are installed without Apartment Life, the espresso bar will not appear in the buy mode catalog.[1]

The Sims 3: University Life

Sims can buy various drinks (energy drinks, herbal teas, hot beverages and organic brews) as well as baked goods. Buying drinks raises a Sim's level in the Rebel social group, but buying food does not. A generated NPC barista is automatically assigned to the coffee bar when it is placed on a community lot.

In contrast to professional bars,[TS3:LN] the full food selection is available on home lots for free, as opposed to being exclusive to community lots.

In Buy Mode, it is not found in any appliances sections, but is found in "Sort by Function" → "Entertainment" → "Parties", and in "Sort by Room" → "Dining Room" → "Bars".

Since espresso bars also contain all the drinks that coffeemakers can brew, it makes coffeemakers mostly unnecessary to also have (This is especially the case on residential lots, where espresso bars do not need NPC staffers), the main exception being that SimBots[TS3:A] cannot chat with an espresso bar's brewing machine.

The Sims 4: Get Together

Sims can order coffee and food either "for here" or "to go", which makes no real difference except for "to go" coffee being in a plastic cup instead of a mug, and "to go" food being in a paper bag instead of on a plate. NPC baristas are only automatically assigned to espresso bars in cafés. On other community lots (or on residential lots) they can be hired for a fee.

There are two espresso bars for sale: one that comes with an espresso machine and coffee grinder, and one that does not. Players have to buy the equipment separately if they buy the bar by itself in order to use it.

The Impress-O Espresso Machine and the Espresso Grind-O-Matic that come with the Easy Energy Espresso Bar Collection can both be purchased as separate items, and placed on top of objects such as Counters. This allows for Sims to make Espresso in areas such as private home kitchens for their own personal consumption.
