Sims and pets can play with each other without the use of additional objects in The Sims series. Some activities require a certain relationship score to become available. Playing always requires at least two Sims and will boost both the fun and social motives.

Sims of all ages can play with each other, although Sims will reject most play interactions or be unavailable until they have developed a good enough relationship with the initiating Sim. In addition, some play interactions are only available for children and toddlers. Most activities will only grant a moderate boost to relationship when the interaction ends, although some activities will provide a steady, continuous boost to relationship. Sims will typically stop playing when their fun meters are full, or if their other motives drop too low.

Toddlers can also be played with by older Sims. They can be tickled, play peek-a-boo or, just like with babies - tossed in the air.

Babies will also have a separate "Play With" interaction available to them, where Sims can cuddle the baby and give it an "Eskimo kiss". Like toddlers, babies can vomit on the Sim if they are played with. Only teens and older can play with a baby.

Pets

Sims can play with dogs and cats as well. Much like other Sims, pets may reject the interaction if they have a poor relationship with the initiating Sim, or if they are in a bad mood. Pets may also autonomously ask to be played with.

The Sims 3

Unlike The Sims 2, there aren't a lot of play-related interactions available between Sims. Children and Sims with the childish can play tag with one another. The Sims 3: Supernatural expansion pack adds a new "rock, paper, scissors" social interaction, which a Sim can play with another. Many recreational games require an object (such as baseball for catch) to be present on the lot or in a Sim's inventory to be played.
