Maid

Kaylynn Langerak, a maid in The Sims 2
A maid is a type of service NPC who performs routine household chores for Sims in exchange for payment. When hired, maids arrive daily at about 10:00 a.m. and will leave either when all their work is done, or when it gets late in the day. Common tasks done by maids include:
- Dishwashing
- Picking up trash and emptying out trash cans or compactors
- Cleaning up after pets [TS2:P]
- Cleaning dirty furniture (e.g., counters[TS2][TS3], toilets, showers)
- Making beds
- Serving food, if directed by a Sim to do so[TS2][TS3] (in The Sims 2, the option is absent if influence is present)
- Doing laundry [TS3:A][TS4:LDS]
- Mopping up puddles and sweeping up ash[TS3] off the floor
Maids have high cooking and cleaning skill points, making them efficient at maintaining a household.
The Sims
Brigit the Maid making a Sim's bed
In The Sims, the maid is a light-skinned brunette named Brigit, who wears a stereotypical "French Maid" outfit. The only available interactions with her are "Dismiss", which makes her leave for the day, and "Fire", which permanently dismisses her from service. For §10 an hour she will make beds, clean bathrooms, spray roaches, mop up puddles, wash dishes, and dispose of trash, pet droppings, and ashes from fires. She works from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though she will leave early if there is nothing left for her to do. However, she does not always finish all tasks within her 7-hour shift. If the Poseidon's Adventure Aquarium from the base game is present, she will clean it, as well as the cages of small pets. She will not clean up unspoiled food unless it is on the floor or the ground, and she does not flush toilets before cleaning them. She may clean certain objects, such as showers and tubs, before they become dirty enough to be cleaned by family members. This can sometimes result in the object becoming stuck in a dirty state.
Brigit's quote when she quits her job after seeing Bonehilda
In The Sims: Makin' Magic, if Brigit encounters Bonehilda, she will quit and flee in terror, only to return if a household member calls to hire her again.
Brigit can be quite glitchy. For example, if she gets stuck or gets interrupted by something, she will immediately dismiss herself and leave the rest of the house uncleaned.
In the trivia game that runs alongside the installation of The Sims 2, Brigit was revealed to be a favorite amongst the game's designers, perhaps explaining why the female maids in both subsequent games are very similar to her in appearance.
Quotes
- What kind of a sick joke is this!? Why is that skeleton wearing my uniform!? Wait a minute, how is that skeleton doing anything at all? I'm outta here, you people are creepy!" - Brigit the Maid, upon seeing the Bonehilda in Makin' Magic.
The Sims (console)
In The Sims for console, the Maid is a female NPC (Non-Playable Character) named Stella, who wears the normal "French Maid" outfit. Sims can't socialize with her. The only options available when she's clicked on are "Dismiss," which makes her leave for the day, and "Fire". As in most games in The Sims series, she charges 10 Simoleons per hour, and will leave with tasks unfinished if it gets too late.
Tasks the maid will complete include:
- Dishes.
- Puddles.
- Trash.
- Showers and Bathtubs.
- Counters.
- Dirty toilets.
- Aquariums.
- Making beds
- Disposing of newspapers, ashes from fires, and indoor trash.
In the Get a Life mode, if the player is unable to pay for the maid, she will confiscate one or more objects in the house that are valued roughly equivalent to that of her pay. The player will be unable to rehire her until they reach the next stage.
Quotes
- "People should learn to clean up after themselves."
- "Stupid people. They always make me clean their houses."
- "All cleaning things suck. I wanna go home."
The Sims Bustin' Out
There is only one maid present in The Sims Bustin' Out. She can be killed with the use of a mutant plant, only to return to do her job as a ghost. In this state, she is able to float through walls and Sims, allowing her to do more cleaning in a shorter amount of time. When she appears as a ghost, she doesn't scare Sims.
The Sims 2 (console)
The maid in The Sims for console
The maid is a blonde Sim who wears the standard French Maid uniform. She cleans somewhat slowly in comparison to other versions. As in most games in The Sims series, she will take an object if a family doesn't have enough money to pay her for her services. While the only available interactions are "Dismiss" and "Fire", Sims can play chess with her, and she may be able to join other activities.
The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories
In The Sims 2 and The Sims Stories, maids can be either male or female, and Sims are able to socialize and build relationships with them. Sims can talk to or flirt with a maid, and ask them to cook meals.[n 1] If Pets is installed, a maid may autonomously interact with a dog or cat, and will fill holes dug by wolves. Male maids wear half-unbuttoned pastel shirts with matching gloves and black pants. Female maids wear stereotypical "French Maid" outfits with white aprons, and have long hair with a small tiara.
If a maid dies, is deleted, or is moved into a household and becomes a playable character, the game will automatically generate a new maid to replace them. One pre-made maid, Kaylynn Langerak, is important in Pleasantview's story.
All maids have maximum cleaning skill, but their neat scores will vary, ranging from low to high. In some cases, a maid's neat score affects whether they will clean or pick up an item. For example, if only an extremely neat Sim would think something needs cleaning, a maid with an average neat score may not clean it. However, maids may clean at least some items before a playable Sim with a similar neat score would recognize them as dirty.
In The Sims 2, maids will flush unflushed toilets before cleaning them.[n 2] They also clean up abandoned meals, even if the food hasn't spoiled yet. If a maid is present, a Sim who stops eating a meal to perform another action may find their meal taken away. Maids usually put away books that sloppy Sims leave on floors and tables, however a maid with a low neat score may leave books where they are. In general, maids finish cleaning inside the house before cleaning up outdoors. If the maid drops garbage because their route to the garbage can was blocked, or because the garbage can has been knocked over, the garbage that was dropped or spilled will not be picked up until the indoor cleaning is finished, even though a knocked-over garbage can will be picked up as soon as the maid notices it.
A maid can mop up puddles that are under objects such as bathtubs and showers, even though other Sims cannot. Maids may also clean up drinkable espresso left in an espresso machine, something that playable Sims cannot do, though they will not always do this.
For some reason, a maid will not empty a toddler's potty. There are game mods that will allow maids to empty the Maxis potties, however. Maids will ignore some items such as cups from the Fruit Punch Barrel[TS2:U], worn-out catnip mice[TS2:P], and worn-out hobby magazines[TS2:FT].
Unlike the maid in The Sims, maids in The Sims 2 will not enter bathrooms that are in use, and will come at once if called after 10:00 a.m., as long as the call is not made too late in the day.
Maids charge §15 per hour, plus a base fee of §10.
In nearly all neighborhoods from The Sims 2 and its expansions and spin-offs, there are three pre-made maids: two female and one male. However, there are no pre-made male maids in Belladonna Cove, and in Strangetown there are technically four pre-made maids, as Jessica Ebadi was a maid prior to becoming a ghost.
WooHooing with a maid will give a Sim a unique memory of WooHooing with a service Sim. Don Lothario has this memory.

List of default maids from The Sims Life Stories
Oddly, thumbnails of Brigit the maid from The Sims can be found hidden deep in the character files of default maids such as Genesis Lam and Kaylynn Langerak. These can be accessed using SimPE. It is unknown why the images are there, but it is possible that it might be just one of many Easter eggs.
Notes
Issues
- In The Sims 2, if a Sim tries to get leftovers from the fridge, the maid will sometimes "snatch" the food out of the Sim's hand and clean it up. This can also happen with butlers. This mod prevents Sims from "snatching" food from another Sim's hand.
The Sims 3
In The Sims 3, maids charge a flat rate of §125 per day, rather than charging by the hour. Aside from that, The Sims 3's maids are very similar to the maids in The Sims 2. While a maid is at work, Sims can chat with them, dismiss them, fire them, or ask them to hang out. After a maid is asked to hang out, they can be interacted with like a normal Sim. Sims can also WooHoo and have children with maids.
Maids can be male or female. Male maids wear a half-unbuttoned white shirt and black pants. Female maids wear the stereotypical "French Maid" outfit: a black dress with a white apron and a small white tiara. Their outfit, however, is much less revealing than it was in The Sims 2 and The Sims.
As in The Sims 2, if a maid dies, is deleted, or is moved into a house and becomes a playable character, the game will automatically generate a new maid to replace them.
Kaylynn Langerak, an NPC maid from Pleasantview, appears as a pre-made child Sim living in Sunset Valley in The Sims 3, however, in this appearance she is not employed as a maid.
Most maids have the same traits: Brave, Charismatic, Kleptomaniac, Neat, and the hidden trait Makes No Messes, which can be inherited by their children. Maids that are generated by the game always have these traits, with a 15% chance of having the Inappropriate trait. However, some pre-made maids, such as Delicia Hoover, have different traits. With the use of cheats or mods, it's possible to choose different traits for maids.
In The Sims 3: Into the Future, maids in Oasis Landing are Plumbots who have the Solar Powered and Competent Cleaner trait chips.[TS3:ITF]
If a maid has the Kleptomaniac trait, they may steal objects from a household if left alone during the evening. As in The Sims: Makin' Magic, maids will become frightened and quit if they encounter Bonehilda[TS3:SN], even if they have the Brave trait. However, if the maid delivers their "Looks like I'm all done here" notification and charges §125 before they encounter Bonehilda, they will not quit.
The vacation destinations in The Sims 3: World Adventures do not have pre-made maids. The maids that do appear are simply generated by the game when needed.
Quotes
A maid will freak out when seeing Bonehilda
- You'll never turn ME into the walking dead! I quit!

The Sims 4
In the The Sims 4 base game, maids can be hired on either a one-time basis or as a recurring service. This action can be performed by using an adult's phone. The rate is §40 base pay plus §20/hour. If a Sim cannot pay the rate, it will be added onto their bills, and the maid will refuse to work for the Sim until the bills are paid. The maid will make beds, clean the house, and repair broken items.
In City Living, an apartment with the Serviced Apartment lot trait will spawn a maid every weekday to clean the apartment, the cost of which is included with the rent. In The Sims 4: Discover University, maids come every weekend to university housing lots to clean up the lot, at no extra cost to the students.
In the Bust the Dust Kit, maids will use vacuum cleaners to clean dusty floors. A common glitch is that maids will sometimes use vacuum cleaners to clean up trash on the floor such as garbage piles or dirty diapers, which will take the maid hours to clean and may result in them leaving the house not fully cleaned if it becomes too late in the day for the maid to stay.
